One Summer Night
It was one of those steamy summer nights. You know, the kind of night when the air is still hot and thick hours after the sun has set and little beads of sweat run down your back even when you're standing still. They thought it was firecrackers at first but quickly realized the pop, pop, pop noise was different than the explosion of firecrackers they heard the fourth of July weekend. It was slower, more methodical. And when it stopped, the house was so still and quiet that Kay held her breath.
