When I came home after dropping my daughter off at college, the house had never felt so empty. So, as part of the annual 100 Day Project, I began writing to her every day. One hundred days of poems, stories, observations, conversations, and occasional ramblings eventually became Letters to Lily.
Sometimes I think, “For the love of God, what the hell are you doing now?” would have been a better title.
I'd read all those What to Expect books when my daughter was little, but none of them prepared me for leaving a wide-eyed teenager on the sidewalk outside her college dorm room. Or for what came next.
Some days were sweet. Others were sad, hilarious, or downright bewildering. I didn't think I needed to tell her not to call campus police when there was a bug in her room, but apparently I should have. She did.
Letters to Lily is an eclectic collection of prose, poetry, and short stories about those first 100 days apart. It's about motherhood, missing someone, finding humor in the unexpected, and learning that letting go doesn't mean loving any less.
My hope is that this book encourages you to write about the people you love and the beautifully complicated, funny, maddening moments you never want to forget.
