Hey, you! So nice of you to click to learn more about me, Kristina Henson.
I live in Upstate New York with my daughter, a Golden Retriever, and two cats. Before writing and illustrating my two books, One Hundred Birds Telling One Hundred Little Stories and Letters to Lily, I maintained a blog and regularly published personal essays while working in the graphic design industry by day and devoting the majority of the rest of my time doing what I love the most — writing and creating books. I love everything about books. With all that’s inside of them—the things I can learn, the places I can travel to, the characters I can fall in love with—what isn’t there to love?
I can define myself by being so many things: a mother, a daughter, a sister, an artist, an author, a designer. But most importantly—and what I remind myself of often—is that I am a woman who needs to create.
I hope you enjoy a peek into my studio and life.
Kristina

Back in Stock, A Birthday Trip, and Tiny Elephants 🐘

Good news! My bird book is back in stock! You can now purchase One Hundred Birds Telling One Hundred Little Stories on my website, and it’s also available at these wonderful local bookstores:

Parthenon Books — Syracuse, NY
That’s What She Read Bookshop & Boutique — Marcellus, NY
All My Friends Books — Cortland, NY

It still feels surreal to walk into a bookstore and see my work sitting on a shelf alongside authors I admire. Knowing these little birdy stories continue to find their way into people’s hands (and hearts) means the world to me.

Last week, I traveled to Colorado to visit Lily for her 25th birthday. We had such a good time together—beautiful sights, delicious food, and plenty of lounging around her sweet new home. Getting there was easy peasy; getting back home… not so much. My connecting flight from Chicago was canceled, so I rented a car and drove the rest of the way.

With a good audiobook, lots of coffee, and a deep breath of surrender, I made peace with the unexpected adventure. Thankfully, my family checked in the whole way. Dinner waited for me in the fridge after the 11½-hour drive. My sister met me late at night to swap the rental for my car and even brought hot soup. She took care of the cats while I was gone and had been hiding tiny elephants around my house all week. Every time I spot one, I crack up and feel such a rush of gratitude. It really is the little things that mean the most.

As I look ahead, I can see the holidays slowly creeping in. This year will feel different without Lily home. I’m not excited about decorating or cooking a big dinner, but I am grateful to have spent her birthday with her and to know she’s building a life filled with love, meaningful work, and—of course—a horse. So this holiday season, I’m choosing simplicity, peace, and—as much as possible—planting myself in my chair to finish my next book.

I wish I could visit each of you and hide tiny elephants around your homes—little surprises that make you laugh out loud when you least expect it. We all need more silliness in our lives.
