Hey, you! So nice of you to click to learn more about me, Kristina Henson.
I live in Upstate New York with my daughter, a Golden Retriever, and two cats. Before writing and illustrating my two books, One Hundred Birds Telling One Hundred Little Stories and Letters to Lily, I maintained a blog and regularly published personal essays while working in the graphic design industry by day and devoting the majority of the rest of my time doing what I love the most — writing and creating books. I love everything about books. With all that’s inside of them—the things I can learn, the places I can travel to, the characters I can fall in love with—what isn’t there to love?
I can define myself by being so many things: a mother, a daughter, a sister, an artist, an author, a designer. But most importantly—and what I remind myself of often—is that I am a woman who needs to create.
I hope you enjoy a peek into my studio and life.
Kristina

Dear Mom, Mother Earth, Momma Birds…🐦📚🌸

Dear Mom, Mother Earth, Momma Birds…🐦📚🌸

Hello Friends.

This painting is from my 2025 Inspirational Birds with Words calendar. May, in all of her glory, is here, and the world around me is bursting with the brightest shades of green, pops of yellow from the Forsythia, and (only!) 12 tulips that the new family of bunnies didn't munch for lunch.

The male cardinals are feisty, chasing each other off to defend their spring mating territory. The flashes of red wings darting around the yard are quite a sight. And finally, after what felt like an extra-long winter, more migratory birds are making their spring debut at the feeder. Hurray!

With Mother's Day quickly approaching, I thought a lot about what the day means to me and how I want to celebrate the women in my life. I know how fortunate I am to have my Mom and Grandmother (100 years old!) still alive and well and making a positive contribution to their communities and our family. I love taking my time to find the perfect little something that I know they'll like and will remind them of how much I love them. And I want to celebrate myself too! The best part of my life has been being Lily's Mother. So, what would my perfect pampering day of celebrating Motherhood look like? Hmmm. I'd love to think I could sleep in, but that never happens in this house. I naturally wake up too early, and it's over once the dog or cats sense me stir, and I'm nudged out from under my pile of cozy blankets before the sun rises. I'd love to sit on the porch with my cup of coffee and fuss around the gardens in my softest pair of sweatpants. I'd love to nap in the hammock after reading a few chapters of a good book. I'd love to eat something delicious for dinner and have someone else wash the dishes.

What about you? Even if you're not a Mother, what would the perfect day look like to celebrate YOU?
